King Of The Beach.

"Laugh, I bet you laughed, laughed right behind my back. I won't ever die. . .I'll go surfing in my mind. I'm not supposed to be a kid, but i'm an idiot. I'd say I was sorry, but it wouldn't mean shit." Not the kindest or most poetic way to express himself, but its the only way Nathan Williams can. Nathan the front man of lo-fi/ noise pop/ news making Wavves, has had quite a start to his music career. After releasing rather successful debut records with band mate Ryan Ulsh, came the Primavera Festival. Nathan had maybe one of the most public meltdowns on stage in recent history. After admitting to have taken a cocktail of ecstasy and Valium before performing, Williams began to bombard the Spanish crowd, then came the dispute between he and Ulsh. Wavves was now a one man show. Then recruitment of Hella's Zach Hill on drums showed progress, soon Hill left to pursue his work with Hella and his own record. Then an public confrontation with Black Lip's front man Jared Swilley, lead to an infamous bar fight, and now Williams seemed to be out of the loop. But like most music stories these days, Williams made an almost 360 and got his "shit" together. Recruiting Billy Hayes (drums) and Stephen Pope (bass) from the late Jay Reatards touring band, he began working on his latest venture, King Of The Beach.
Williams chose to record the new record not on home equipment, not his Macbook, but instead at Sweet Tea Studios. The results of a studio record obviously has improved the sound quality, but William's song writing has improved significantly. Williams is quoted as saying "Well in a studio like this, nothing is hidden. So of course the song writing has to be a lot better." With this record Williams is trying to fight off every knock that has been associated with his name and Wavves. The assumption that every song of theirs sounds the same, was something he admitted. So he took this to heart and has made a more diverse attracting record then ever before. The record itself is a fantastic summer record, the term "Fun Record" has been used a lot, but this record is just that, alot of fun. Songs like "Idiot", "Linus Spacehead", and "Green Eyes" are songs that truly show the progress William's has made in his music making. There are still still signature Wavves lyrics, and even same chord combinations, but the sound, song, and overall quality to the record is by far the best Wavves release to day. And credit this to Williams himself. He has had to look in a mirror, put drug/alcohol/angst aside and try to show he is not what they all say, a hack. With being the Internets punching bag ever since arriving onto the music scene, Nathan Williams is fighting back, and with King of the Beach, he has landed a serious right hook.

Day Man AAAAH HHH.

Green Eyes.

I know I know. . .Another Wavves post. But these kids got some kind of charismatic spunk that just draws me in. And I have a really good feeling that King of the Beach is going to be a big hit. So i'm gonna talk about them now before everyone starts talking about them then.

Strange Hand.

If you haven't listened to a song by Jacuzzi Boys, why not? whats with you? are you on dope? and even if you were you should have still picked up on them. Anyways if you have not, today is your lucky day. Jacuzzi Boys are a Florida three piece who sounds like a mix between the Black Lips, Black Flag, Red Kross, and alittle bit of the Munsters splashed in. Serenating in the lo-fi world, they have caught my ear more then almost any other band out there. Mexican Summer just released their 7" entitled "Bricks or Coconuts", I have the song at the bottom of this boring post. But also check out their record "No Season" its very good. And if your not sold on this band yet, Iggy "I'm too Sexy For My Shirt" Pop was quoted as saying this, "This Is my favorite new band EVAH."

Good Trip.

In most recent interviews, Nathan Williams of Wavves, has confessed that the new record King of the Beach will be a more "Cleaned up sound" then  previous works. Now with the enlisted help of Jay Reatard's old band,  we have our first listen to a new song off the record. Like Nathan's muse preceded him, the song is entitled "Post Acid". Cleaned up or fuzzed out, I think Wavves have found a very good middle.

Even If It Works Out.

Cloud Nothings,or Dylan Baldi and crew have quickly gotten my attention in the past weeks. Hailing from Cleveland, the troupe are descendants of the lo-fi movement. A close listen and an premature comparison to Wavves may be realistic, but there are differences, I just haven't figured them out yet.
