The Painter Can't Walk Away.
One of my favorite obscure musicians Dan Bejar is back with Destroyers newest novel-esque melodrama. The record Kaputt is not out yet, But here is a single from the album. Which sounds more Rubies then Trouble in dreams. Giving any loyal Destroyer fans some satisfaction hearing the similarity to that of "Painter in your pocket" i'm sure Danny Boy has alot more people and places to tell us about.

Him and She.
Take Vivian Girls main girl Cassie Ramone, and Woods bassist Kevin Morby and you have The Babies. No these two Woodsist alumni have not given birth to a literal rugrat, but a new quite catchy side project. According to Pitchfork their self-titled full length is due out in early February. You can hear the album opener "Run Me Over" below the ripped jeans

My Hearts Learned To Kill.
I've been waiting for Kristian Matsson to release a video for his Wild Hunt record. He finally has. The record itself is the most beautiful and passionate music project of 2010. The song and video are perfect examples of it.
The Tallest Man On Earth- Love is All.
Undercover Boss.
Vintage video of the boss's unreleased "Promise" off of "Darkness on the edge of town" my personal favorite Springsteen record. Look how skinny Max Weinberg looks!

I'm Not There, I'm Here Mama.
As he approaches his 70'th birthday, Bob Dylan is still a staple in this countrie's landscape. Recently performing a private performance for the President, he left the president confessing "Even I couldn't impress Dylan." A recent rare obscure showing on History Channel's "Pawn Stars" left many raising their eyebrows. A new exhibit is on display entitled “Forever Young: A Retrospective of Bob Dylan Photographs by Douglas R. Gilbert." Gilbert's intimate privy photos of a young Dylan are going to be on center stage for the audience at hand. And a week from today, Dylan's "Witmark Demos" are set to drop. The private and intimate session displays a young Dylan joking and forgetting even his own lyrics. But rare performances of his most famous songs and unreleased treats as well. To go along with the anticipated release, "Bob Dylan-The Original Mono Recordings" also will release. The box set includes the legend's first 8 studio lps in one complete boxset. At the moment Dylan is still on tour, and you can believe there is no looking back for the man who shaped music forever. So a little over fifty years in music, the rambling, traveling, lying, finger pointing, folksinging, times a changing, voice of our generation is still singing today. For himself and for everyone who can't.

Ghost Lover.
On October 12, Art Fag Recordings is releasing Las Robertas' "Cry Out Loud" LP. The Costa Ricans gragage fuzz has been contagious. Many are calling them the "new" Best Coast. But these gals already sound a whole lot better.Take a listen and catch their catchy pop disease.

Friends Forever/ Sleep Forever.
Emerging from the mind of artist/photographer Ryan McGinley, comes "Sleep Forever" Not to be confused with the recent Crocodiles lp, the mini-mentry gives an intimate look into two of the most promising bands in the past year. Youngsters "Smith Westerns" and the always entertaining "Girls" the clip displays both groups performing at the recent Pitchfork music festival. Overall nice video, and props to little kid who knows EVERY lyric. But deduct cool points for his Brett Micahel's bandanna. Enjoy. .

Art Is All.
Continuing my record label theme, here is another new label. Art Is Hard is a UK based label with some pretty promising bands. Though not even having a website, solely relying on their myspace the label is still relatively raw. Below is a recent sampler, there is some pretty good music to be heard and discovered. So check it out!

I'm Still Here.
I'm not sure why i'm so fascinated about this, but ever since his appearance on Letterman, Joaquin Phoenix has become the mysterious enigma everyone is trying to unravel. The pretty boy in his early career, shadow of being River Phoenix's brother, to an academy award nominated performance of the late Johnny Cash, then giving up acting all together to pursue a rap career. I've been waiting for this documentary ever since the infamous interview. Directed by his brother in law Casey Affleck, this is the truth or what at least Joaquin wants us to think is the truth of whats really going on.

Been looking into a lot of record labels lately, and Hozac Records seems to be one of the most exciting and promising.Releasing 7"s of the likes of Woven Bones, Smith Westerns, Jacuzzi Boys, Nobunny, and many many more! But what draws me to the label even more is what they have coming up. Eps and 7"s of newer acts such as Super Wild Horses (who I posted a video of last week) The Flips a really cool sounding girl band. Sleepovers another band you should check out. If you haven't already head over to their site and listen to all the music for free. If you're too lazy, which you probably are, here are a couple of songs to hold you over.

FYF Spotlight #3
After hearing a track of theirs on my girlfriend's mix, I was HOOKED to this band. The U.K band Lets Wrestle has been playing nonstop on my Zune. Their debut record is still something I've been searching nonstop for. But after listening to pretty much the whole record online, I am very impressed. Recently they've signed to Merge, and the label will re-release the record in late March. Until then, listen to any tracks, 7"s, and make sure to see them when you're at FYF. Below is their single of their ep. Cleverly titled "We are the men you will grow to love"

A beautiful song, a beautiful video, and a beautiful album. You made Wes Anderson proud with this video you Britts. If you haven't seen or heard Mumford and Sons before heres a great place to start. Enjoy.
Mumford and Sons-The Cave.
FYF Spotlight #2
Next band to be spotlighted is maybe one of the most exciting up and coming bands around. Though lead singer Jana Hunter has been associated with many other things, Lower Dens is her newest. Very dark-rock melodic sounds, Kinda like the XX minus all the pop. I for one am looking forward to seeing them perform live. Check out their new record that JUST released three days ago. Here is a sample of what they sound like and what to expect from these folks.
Scissor Runner.
Another couple recording music together of late, This time its Jenny Lewis and Jonathan Rice aka Jenny and Johnny. Not the most original sound, but hey its not bad. Try it if you have a craving for something sweet.

The Day The Earth Melted.
It is WAY TOO HOT right now. The weather is So nasty and unbearable. And taking the bus with forty sweaty people crammed up against each other is the last thing i'd want to be. But I have no other choice. Remember that episode of Hey Arnold where the heat takes over the city, then it starts to snow? Well thats New York, this is LA and the only snow we have here is a snow cone. Gosh even a snow cone sounds soooo good right now. .Anyways here are some tips to beat the heat:
Enjoy an inexpensive Slurpee from your local 7-11
Enjoy and hug your ac!
Enjoy losing a nipple on a Slip n Slide!

King Of The Beach.
"Laugh, I bet you laughed, laughed right behind my back. I won't ever die. . .I'll go surfing in my mind. I'm not supposed to be a kid, but i'm an idiot. I'd say I was sorry, but it wouldn't mean shit." Not the kindest or most poetic way to express himself, but its the only way Nathan Williams can. Nathan the front man of lo-fi/ noise pop/ news making Wavves, has had quite a start to his music career. After releasing rather successful debut records with band mate Ryan Ulsh, came the Primavera Festival. Nathan had maybe one of the most public meltdowns on stage in recent history. After admitting to have taken a cocktail of ecstasy and Valium before performing, Williams began to bombard the Spanish crowd, then came the dispute between he and Ulsh. Wavves was now a one man show. Then recruitment of Hella's Zach Hill on drums showed progress, soon Hill left to pursue his work with Hella and his own record. Then an public confrontation with Black Lip's front man Jared Swilley, lead to an infamous bar fight, and now Williams seemed to be out of the loop. But like most music stories these days, Williams made an almost 360 and got his "shit" together. Recruiting Billy Hayes (drums) and Stephen Pope (bass) from the late Jay Reatards touring band, he began working on his latest venture, King Of The Beach.
Williams chose to record the new record not on home equipment, not his Macbook, but instead at Sweet Tea Studios. The results of a studio record obviously has improved the sound quality, but William's song writing has improved significantly. Williams is quoted as saying "Well in a studio like this, nothing is hidden. So of course the song writing has to be a lot better." With this record Williams is trying to fight off every knock that has been associated with his name and Wavves. The assumption that every song of theirs sounds the same, was something he admitted. So he took this to heart and has made a more diverse attracting record then ever before. The record itself is a fantastic summer record, the term "Fun Record" has been used a lot, but this record is just that, alot of fun. Songs like "Idiot", "Linus Spacehead", and "Green Eyes" are songs that truly show the progress William's has made in his music making. There are still still signature Wavves lyrics, and even same chord combinations, but the sound, song, and overall quality to the record is by far the best Wavves release to day. And credit this to Williams himself. He has had to look in a mirror, put drug/alcohol/angst aside and try to show he is not what they all say, a hack. With being the Internets punching bag ever since arriving onto the music scene, Nathan Williams is fighting back, and with King of the Beach, he has landed a serious right hook.

Green Eyes.
I know I know. . .Another Wavves post. But these kids got some kind of charismatic spunk that just draws me in. And I have a really good feeling that King of the Beach is going to be a big hit. So i'm gonna talk about them now before everyone starts talking about them then.

Strange Hand.
If you haven't listened to a song by Jacuzzi Boys, why not? whats with you? are you on dope? and even if you were you should have still picked up on them. Anyways if you have not, today is your lucky day. Jacuzzi Boys are a Florida three piece who sounds like a mix between the Black Lips, Black Flag, Red Kross, and alittle bit of the Munsters splashed in. Serenating in the lo-fi world, they have caught my ear more then almost any other band out there. Mexican Summer just released their 7" entitled "Bricks or Coconuts", I have the song at the bottom of this boring post. But also check out their record "No Season" its very good. And if your not sold on this band yet, Iggy "I'm too Sexy For My Shirt" Pop was quoted as saying this, "This Is my favorite new band EVAH."

Good Trip.
In most recent interviews, Nathan Williams of Wavves, has confessed that the new record King of the Beach will be a more "Cleaned up sound" then previous works. Now with the enlisted help of Jay Reatard's old band, we have our first listen to a new song off the record. Like Nathan's muse preceded him, the song is entitled "Post Acid". Cleaned up or fuzzed out, I think Wavves have found a very good middle.

Even If It Works Out.
Cloud Nothings,or Dylan Baldi and crew have quickly gotten my attention in the past weeks. Hailing from Cleveland, the troupe are descendants of the lo-fi movement. A close listen and an premature comparison to Wavves may be realistic, but there are differences, I just haven't figured them out yet.

I recently read and listened to this band on another blog. I haven't heard of this band before, nor was I able to find their website or even myspace. So this is the only method of sharing this music with you. The Seattle lo-fi band is Stephanie, the song is titled "Love for Sale".
Stephanie- Love For Sale
Jeans Wilder has always been a nice band to listen to on days like this. And I seriously can not think of a band with a better name.
How are you Wavves? Nathan that you? Still hanging out with Garfield and Mickey Mouse?

Touching From A Distance.
Today marks the 30th anniversary of Ian Curtis' death. Curtis who committed suicide on the eve of Joy Division's North American tour , suffered from sever anguish. A battle with Epilepsy, A failing marriage, An affair, Deep depression, all played a profound impact on his young heart and soul. Ian's distinct voice, signature dance style, and masterful song writing can't be challenged by anyone in my opinion. And 30 years later Joy Division and Ian's music have just as much influence and impact it did 30n years back. Its a tragedy that it ended so soon, but with the records and eps he left us, we will be satisfied for years to come. As a reporter wisely stated in the Joy Division documentary: "Joy Division, Ian's story in particular is the last true story in Rock n' Roll". .I couldn't agree more.
"I break them down, no mercy shown,
Heaven knows, it's got to be this time,
Avenues all lined with trees,
Picture me and then you start watching,
Watching forever, forever,
Watching love grow, forever,
Letting me know, forever."
